The online courses merely help the students to understand the material more thoroughly and can even provide some e-books that make it even easier to obtain quality reading materials in the comfort of the home.
A solid home school reading program will teach children the strategies that they need to tackle more and more difficult reading material. Younger children will need strategies such as learning to sound out words and the different strategies that they can use to figure out what a word means without having to look it up necessarily. Older children will begin to learn about the different story elements in fictional works and learn how to analyze non fiction materials so that they can understand them. Often, there is a lot of writing that is also done in conjunction to the home school reading program so that the children can learn to respond to the various works that they are reading as well as learn to mimic the different styles of writing that they are reading.
Home school reading programs are essential to the ability of the child to be able to succeed in the other classes that he is taking. Reading is fundamental and if the child is not given the tools that he needs in reading, he will struggle in other classes that are reading intensive, such as social studies and even science related classes. The child might also struggle with word problems in math because he will not be able to break down and analyze what the problem is asking him to do.
