When parents are deciding whether or not to home school, there are many different considerations that should be thought through. First, the parents need to find out what the requirements are in that particular state for providing a legal home schooling situation. Most states offer a variety of choices in allowing parents the opportunity to home school their children, such as utilizing the state’s curriculum, going by the standards of an approved home schooling organization, and other options. With each one, however, there is usually the requirement that the children take the state’s exam at the end of each year to prove that they are getting the information that the state says that they need to go on to the next grade level.

Curriculum

Choosing the best home schooling curriculum can make or break the experience for both parents and children. Each child and each parent has a particular method of learning or teaching that is preferable and comfortable to them. The problems occur when parents try to use their preferred learning style on their children, which tends to make both parties frustrated. Children usually lean toward one particular learning style, such as kinesthetic, visual or auditory. If the children are kinesthetic learners, they will not do well having to sit behind a desk all day and listen to a lecture or watch a presentation. Kinesthetic learners learn by doing, so the curriculum that is used in home schooling should be active. Auditory learners learn best by hearing, so this type of child would do well with a lecture style of environment and by having discussions. The visual learners will do best by having things demonstrated for them so that they can watch how it is done.

The curriculums come in many different formats as well to fit the style of teaching and learning that is required in a particular home schooling environment. There are online curriculums, Christian curriculums, and curriculums that are made for foreign language speaking households. Some of the curriculums are accredited, meaning that they have been approved by an educational board as being a comprehensive curriculum for all ages which will fully prepare a child through high school if needed. There are also some non accredited programs that can also be used but the parents may have to do more supplemental learning along with those programs. Parents need to determine what type of curriculum that they are looking for and what the budget is for buying one. There are some used curriculums that can help with cost as well as some free resources.
