For parents, choosing a home school program is essential to the success of being able to home school the children. If the curriculum does not hold up to educational standards then the parents will do their children a disservice for the future, and that is the last thing on home school parents’ minds. Home school parents are usually not satisfied with the state of the public school system and may not have enough money to send the children to a private school that might better meet their children’s requirements. They may feel that a particular child needs more time at home before they are ready to be in a public school environment. In any case, the home schooling parents want what is best for their children and choosing the curriculum is essential to the task.

Making or Breaking Math

Often the home school math curriculum can be one of the most frustrating subjects for parents to teach to their children. Sometimes parents will get bored with the repetitious nature of the home school math curriculum and will start to vary from the format of the system. This can be a dangerous decision unless the parent is an expert in math because the children need the foundational skills in order to be able to function effectively later on in their school careers in the subject. There are accredited home school math curriculums that have been approved by the government as a system of teaching math that will give children all the skills that they need to function at a college level later in life. These systems can be repetitive, but a certain amount of repetition is essential to the child’s learning the concepts.

Teaching the home school math curriculum often requires the parents to buy some manipulative materials, especially during the elementary and middle school years. These manipulative materials allow children to learn the concepts and experience them in a kinesthetic way through the use of the materials. This is an especially important method for children who are kinesthetic learners and need that ‘hands on’ experience to retain concepts. The home school match curriculum also requires that parents plan what time of day the children are the most alert and use that time to teach them math. If the children have difficulty keeping still for math time, it is a good idea to take them out for some physical exercise before starting the math lesson since they will better be able to concentrate then.
